Science Palooza with Mr. P

Students in Mr. Piecuch's room celebrated Science with a "Science Lab Palooza" this week. Here is a look at all the fun they had.

LAB 1

POP ROCKETS

How It Works...........

When the fizzy tablet touches the water a CHEMICAL REACTION starts, which releases CARBON DIOXIDE gas. The gas is made of lots of particles of matter, which spread inside the sealed container. Finally, the container pops up off of its lid and shoots into the air due to pressure that the particles built up inside.

Secret Message Writer

How It Works.............

After you write on the paper with the baking soda and water mixture, the water evaporates leaving trails of baking soda crystals. The purple pigment from the blackberry reacts with the baking soda crystals, forming a new substance! Since a new substance is formed, this is a chemical change.

ELEPHANT'S TOOTHPASTE

How It Works............

Hydrogen peroxide is also known as H2O2. That's the chemical symbol for hydrogen peroxide. It's different from water, which is H2O because it has more Oxygen than water. We used this extra oxygen and released as a gas through a chemical reaction. In this experiment we used yeast as a catalyst in order to release that oxygen.

When we poured the yeast into the hydrogen peroxide it became oxygen gas and released into the water, and since we used dish soap it made lots of bubbles.
