Drug Testing Information
The District is considering a very important wellness initiative that will focus on keeping our student athletes and drivers drug-free through a combination of education, testing, and support. Like all teenagers, our students face constant pressure to experiment with illegal substances.
Currently, the District has educational programs, counseling, and intervention programs in place but given the pressure our students face the District is considering another option that will allow our students to say no. Beginning next fall, the District is considering a stance that involves randomly drug testing our student athletes in grades 7-12, as well as our student drivers. By implementing this program we want to give students (1) a reason not to use drugs, alcohol and tobacco (2) a reason to quit, if they have started, and (3) a reason to get help if they cannot quit.
It is important to note that this initiative is about helping our kids first and accountability second. Ultimately, this program is not designed to be punitive; it is designed as a proactive prevention and intervention strategy.
The rationale for the proposed drug testing will be discussed and a draft of the Drug and Alcohol Awareness and Testing for Athletic Programs and Student Drivers policy will be shared. The drug-testing vendor will review the testing process and will be on hand to answer any questions. Meanwhile, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Bret Trotta at firstname.lastname@example.org On our website we have provided a draft copy of this policy as well as a Frequently Asked Questions document.
